But I bet there were no snails anymore.

Not sure about the snails, I’ve never seen snails on any beach in South Africa. The seagulls may possibly take care of them if there were, but I know that ducks are very good at gobbling up the snails.

The ostriches must pop over the fence from the ostrich farm bordering the nature reserve. There is a fully productive ostrich farm there, which I wouldn’t have known about if Jan Eliot hadn’t done this South African strip, thank you, Jan. I knew about the ostrich farms in the Little Karoo but even my husband didn’t know about this one and he grew up in the Eastern Cape. There are some lovely photographs on their website which you can access via Google and our skies really are that blue.

I noticed the “stank” thing, but it seems that a lot of people say “stunk” because it sounds more . . . I dunno, proper or elegant.

However, I still can’t get over all my doctors telling me to “lay” down on the examining table. Ugh.

There was a golf course in Sacramento overrun by geese. The only advantage was every now and then you would end up with your ball “tee’d up” in the fairway were you could use your driver. Just had to remember to bring a lot of towells.

In addition to the penguins I showed here Wednesday, in 2001, I also saw baboons (they like to get into cars, parked by the side of the road)

I am posting directly from South Africa. I am really enjoying this South African series because the rest of the world seems to know very little about South Africa because we were isolated by sanctions for so many years.

South Africa (and Zimbabwe) are beautiful places… pity about the truly spectacular crime rate. Going out for a picnic? Checklist: basket, sandwiches, drinks, rifles… (this list is a genuine comment from a SA chum who lives in Cape Town). Having said that, when we were in southern Africa we fell totally in love with the place… amazing scenery, wildlife, the kindest people.
