Arnold: You'll love South Africa, Evie...and you have nothing to fear!
Arnold: See? We're safe at home now!
Arnold: You can open your eyes.
Gramma Evie: You didn't TELL me people here drive on the other side of the ROAD.
In Australia the guys who race cars refer to cars which have left hand drive as “left hookers”. It used to be illegal to import left hand drive cars, then you used to have to display a sign on the back saying “Left Hand Drive”. Now they don’t worry about it – it’s a very small part of the market.
I remember reading the newspaper coverage of the Swedish lane change and marveled at the relatively painless implementation. I used to chat with an Australian couple on Yahoo years ago, and asked about which side they drove on. Their reply was, “We drive on the CORRECT side of the road.”
@freewaydog – not so. However, if you were referring to Fairportfan2’s comment about Sicily, you would be quite correct. Fortunately I lived in Hialeah for three years before moving to Israel, so it wasn’t quite so much of a shock.
Oh, Evie! Did you forget to do your homework? You knew you were going; you could have done a quick web search. I just did, and found that the blood alcohol limit (.o5) is a little more stringent than Canada’s .08; and garages fill your tank and check vital fluids and tyre pressure for a tip of around R5.On the other hand, I might not have thought to check either. But I’m not surprised to see right-hand drive there.
Thats true, we changed in the 60ies, and we did it a choosen date. (before I was born actually). The strange was that most of our cars were made for driving on the right… So I believe it became a lot safer after that.
While I can imagine it must be rather unnerving at first to drive on the opposite side to which you’re accustomed, I’m a little surprised that Evie of all people is so rattled by it, especially since she’s not even driving. Since she’s traveled and lived abroad, how is it that this comes as a shock to her?

Yes, we do drive on the left, same as in the UK and I think Australia.

Cayman Islands drive on the left also. Don’t remember what they do in Grand Turk. (British influence)

Virgin Islands too even though they’re an American colony.

When we were in London we kept looking to wrong direction when we waited for the bus.

Evie had the same reaction that my bride(of 1-1/2 mnnths) had when she arrived in London and we sent into a ’round-about in an American car ! !

Thailand is another left side country. A taxi ride there was a harrowing experience.

Everyone enjoy Valentine’s Day today. I wonder if U.S. drives know which side off road to drive on.
