Be careful Danae. Suggesting to people that they have self-awareness may lead them to consider that they have a capacity for introspection and an ability to recognize themselves as distinct from their environment and other individuals and perceive aspects of their motivations, thought processes, behaviour, personality and emotions that could lead via a tortuous process to a state of happiness and well being that would most likely put them outside of your control.

I’ m all for an extra holiday (coming as I do from an era when we got both Washington’s and Lincoln’s actual birthdays off each year instead of a single generic Monday somewhere in the general vicinity of both), but I’m not happy with Danae’s choice of February 2nd..Holidays at each end of the calendar year are thickly spread, with only a couple of weeks separating most of them. And yet, there are no days in all of March, April, June or August where the banks, libraries and post offices are all closed (the “real” definition of a holiday). Schools too, for those jurisdictions that have gone to year-round classes..I move we set up something about a week into August and find an excuse to take the day off work every year. Doesn’t matter what the official name is, just something that we can put on our calendars.

If you don’t agree with me, you are a bigot/racist. Isn’t this what the Liberals always say when you don’t like Obama’s policies???

Since we’re all “tossing” terms around; Merriam-Webster says: Full Definition of BIGOT: a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance

“a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices”-—————————————-We certainly have some of those on the GoComics Comments boards (not necessarily this one); then they call other posters “trolls”.

Sadly, Danae’s right about this country. We’re so focused on how others perceive us we’ll do anything to look good. Conformity is a virtue in this country. The same one that once embraced rugged individualism and the pioneer spirit.

Great jab at people who think calling someone “bigot” is some catchall insult when it’s not as big a deal as they think. It usually works too. “Noo! I am not a ‘bigot’!”

-We’re all bigots on this bus-Regarding the self as superior does not automatically mean that the person also feels hatred and intolerant toward others.

-The last time I checked bigotry wasn’t a crime-Considering yourself or your group to be superior to some other group or person, and saying so, isn’t a crime.- Acting on that belief by burning a cross on someone’s property, or beating them up, or dragging them behind a car till they die are all crimes and they were inspired by bigotry and hatred. -Long story short: bigotry in the hands of a skilled psychotic leader can create criminal activity.

Danae could move to New Zealand and have today off.Waitangi Day is observed on February 06. Waitangi Day (wye-TANG-ee) commemorates a significant day in the history of New Zealand. It is a public holiday held each year on 6 February to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document, on that date in 1840.
