Technically, “alicorn” is properly the word for the unicorn’s horn. I’m not sure how it gained the meaning creep of also referring to winged unicorns, too, but everyone seems to use it that way.

So true. It has definitely acquired that meaning in the MLP:FIM fandom. Marigold is still awesome.

I always thought the proper spelling ought to be “allicorn.” Likened to “alligator.” What’s up with that?

Happy Twelfth Day of Christmas, everyone.I have a theory concerning the definition of alicorn:It may have its basis in the word ala (plural: alae), meaning “a wing or a wing-like anatomic process or part.” – (from Webster’s Dictionary)

    ala

+ unicorn = alicorn, or winged unicorn. As I said, this is only a theory, not a fact.

    I stand corrected.

Alicorn = the horn of a Unicorn.

The idea of Alicorn meaning winged Uniorn is false.

And the Latin pseudo-explanation that is wide spread is flawed as well. It all started with a book author using the term incorrectly, out of mistake. he had no idea what it means, and assumed it means Winged Unicorn because it appeared in an ad.

It is a pure accident that the Latin for wing sounds similar.

There never was a word for winged Unicorn. There were intentional attempts, resulting in words like “pegacorn” or “unipeg” from mashing Unicorn and Pegasus.

Also, Pegasus was the name of one, specific winged horse and not a term meaning winged horse in general.

(In Lation it would be “Alate Unicornis”. In no any way would that become Ali- .)

So in short, Alicorn has NOTHING to do with winged Unicorns. Someone started using it for that by mistake because he had no clue what it truly means.

DARN, why others can make empty lines and I can’t? Every time I try it gets deleted… :/

It may be too much of a bother for Windows users, but a Mac user can just make an empty line consisting of the non-breaking-space character, which looks like a space, but, technically, isn’t one, so it won’t be collapsed as spaces are. On a Mac, with either the US or US Extended keyboard, and probably most other keyboards, that’s Option+spacebar. On Windows, I think Alt+0-1-6-0 will do it, but I’m not sure.

Well, it’s not likely to be confused; it’s pronounced AY-layt.
