As a one time resident of Miss, and a long time resident of Virginia, I wonder why it is ignorant or misinformed to consider parts of the south, a “Bible Belt”, Doctor Warbucks. It is, however, more appropriate to recognize that rural areas, particularly farming communities, place more importance on religion than in suburban and urban areas. In those areas, there is pride in being considered part of the bible belt. In Lynchburg, Va., I met a man who proudly stated his town was the buckle of that belt.I also suggest that the reason people are moving to those states is because they are following the businesses seduced into opening in those states by governors who offer generous packages that allow businesses to start up at low cost, but do so at the cost of services and revenue made up by the current residents of those states. The cartoon however should not be a call to criticize the US. This may be the most dangerous Olympics in that organizations history. Too many angry and evil people are willing to punish the innocent as a way to embarrass those at whom they are truly angry. I pray the athletes and those who attend are able to compete in this Olympics in safety and peace.Respectfully,C.

“If the “South” (what some misinformed, ignorant libs refer to as the Bible belt)”I’ve not heard the south referred to the Bible Belt. I’ve only seen that term applied to the Midwest—Kansas, Missouri, and the like.

The short answer is that 1.4% is still a positive population growth rate in California, and by number it beats “migration” south. What is greater 2% in Texas or 1.4% in California. (26.4 × .02 vs 38.3 × .014)

However it seems that large swaths of people rather dislike statistics and will ignore such, instead going on the availability heuristic

“Breakaway” republics, and individuals, like Thomas Jefferson, Jefferson Davis, “State of Jefferson”(N. California and southern Oregon today), Viet Nam, Mexico, Haiti, Cuba, South Africa, hmmmm, domination by an empire is always better for folks to submit to , right??

Right, if they share OUR values, they’’re good, if their values differ from ours, they’re bad, right??

If the “South” (what some misinformed, ignorant libs refer to as the Bible belt) is such a backward, repressive place, WHY do the hordes of residents from the Northeast and from California continue to move here?More Sun and milder winters. Lower cost of living means a person with savings from up North can buy a house for less.
