These strips were originally in black and white (I know, because I’ve still got the books), and I suspect the purple gloves are an artifact of the gocomics coloring system.
I’ve never been able to find out for sure, but I have a strong suspicion that the coloring system is 90-plus-percent automated, which would explain the occasional peculiarities like the purple hands or the time the coloring of a “Tarzan” strip made it look like Jane wasn’t wearing anything under her trench coat.
I felt this way every time I was sent on a business trip. I didn’t have the kids at the time, but the amazement that someone like me would be chosen for such an expensive trip, get to stay in a hotel and eat out every meal, was thrilling!
