Does Bok have any concept of how many deaths from environmental pollution have NOT occurred because NIXON signed NEPA, the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act, and got us the EPA? Yep, that coal that was killing folks in London before regulation hit Europe as well, was such a positive form of “post-birth control”!!

The “right’s” condemnation of science in general, and anything that reduces corporate profit, to ANY degree, in particular isn’t just “political slant”, it’s pure insanity.

I see complaints about over-regulation, but I rarely see specific examples provided to back up the claim. I wouldn’t doubt there is some room for improvement, but there is a difference between trimming a hedge and blindly hacking away at it.

Please explain to me how exactly regulating the color scheme for DC taxis (and eliminating thereby the money spent on logo/brand building) is not regulatory over-reach: http://dctaxi.dc.gov/page/uniform-taxicab-color-scheme ?

^1967 flying down from SEATAC to LAX after ‘Nam, and the pilot came on when we were getting close to LA to say that they were switching to ILS because the smog was so thick they didn’t have visibility for visual flight rules. The L.A. basin was indeed a yellow/orange/brown sewer with lethal air quality. Yes, those terrible laws Nixon signed DID save lives.

Tigger: as you never pay attention, I will try anyway, Nixon WAS a crook, he extended the Viet Nam war longer than necessary, and was a terrible person, but he DID accomplish more “good things” than “W” and Cheney!!

China is so bad (google image on “Asian Brown Cloud”) that residents are warned to stay indoors on bad days, last January it went over the expected top of the scale by 50%, they’ve shut down highways, airports, and schools due to smog that permitted 65 feet of visibility; and Chinese aviation authorities are now requiring local pilots to get certified for landing in smog. So, yes, some regulation appears to be in order. China is starting to do theirs, but there’s no reason why we should sit back and set a slightly better example. It wasn’t that long ago that we had similar levels of smog, and it was regulation that fixed it.

Over-regulation is possible if it doesn’t address the problem in question..I don’t understand why that is hard to understand.

Agreed from what I hear China’s government is ignoring environmental problems they are causing. One problem with correcting the situation is that The Communist Party in control doesn’t respond well to complaints. The smog might kill you in a few years but The Party might kill you tonight if you complain..They found the same situation in Eastern Europe after the USSR collapsed, even without the taint of CAPITALISM hazardous waste and polluting sources were everywhere.(And nobody ever accused the Soviets of under-regulating.
