For many years, the local high school mascot was an American Indian. Over the years, the mascot morphed from a disrespectful cartoon stereotype to one appearing more honored and dignified. Rival schools, however continued to use derisive terms and imagery during spirit days and pep rallies. “Go [team name], scalp the Indians!” comes to mind. Even if you actually mean well, sometimes it’s just better make the change.
