    I assume that in he US you eat some sort of foul, synthetic fruit cake. In the UK, we have a rich, dark fruit cake made with a range of dried fruits and nuts, steeped with port and brandy – one of the joys of Xmas.

    My deceased aunt, who was born in 1892, made fruitcakes every year that were wonderfully delicious. Some of the fruit in them had been candied but it was certainly real. Dark, rich, and so good with a glass of eggnog or boiled custard it would keep in the refrigerator for months and only improve in texture and flavor as it aged.

    My grandmother made what she called rum cake, made by mixing fermented fruit cocktail and raisins (allowed to ferment for about a week) and a special cake batter. She never passed down the recipe, and I have missed it since she passed. It was the only food with alcohol that I would eat. I am a serious teetotaler.
