I assume that in he US you eat some sort of foul, synthetic fruit cake. In the UK, we have a rich, dark fruit cake made with a range of dried fruits and nuts, steeped with port and brandy – one of the joys of Xmas.

Yeah, like we’re going to go to the UK for gourmet advice…

I think it depends on the manufacturer. Some use fresh ingredients and some don’t.

I’ve never had fruitcake myself. It’s just never been around the house for me to try and I’ve never thought about buying it. Does anyone recommend a good brand of fruitcake?

Yes; home-made. They’re easy enough to make, though they take vast qquantities of fruit and the liquor bill gets a bit high for the month… There are six of my Beloved’s fruitcakes staying cool in the basement at the moment, with two bottles of brandy soaking into them. There’s a third bottle soaking into them, too, but I can’t remember what it is.

If you MUST buy a fruitcake, look for one that is labelled as having real fruit. It’ll be about twice the price of the ones with imitation fruit. Look at the list of ingredients on the cake; if it contains Rutabaga, put it down and find a more expensive one. Rutabaga (AKA turnip) is not a fruit, but is used as filler in the cheap fruitcakes.

Christoph Waltz would be awesome, thou If Waltz couldn’t do it, Buscemi would be a good fall back :P

My deceased aunt, who was born in 1892, made fruitcakes every year that were wonderfully delicious. Some of the fruit in them had been candied but it was certainly real. Dark, rich, and so good with a glass of eggnog or boiled custard it would keep in the refrigerator for months and only improve in texture and flavor as it aged.

A really good commercial fruitcake is made by the Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana, TX. I’ve been buying their fruitcakes for about 20 years now. They aren’t cheap but they are very tasty. They have a web site for easy ordering.
