Actually, per some more enlightened folks, like well, the Dalai Lama, Science has actually brought better understanding to what the Buddha, as well as some other “prophets” of other religions understood, centuries ago.. The real argument is with the literalists of “the book”, so many times translated, and with so many common errors in those translations. (Then add in “interpretations” by religious “leaders” for a few centuries as well.)
So many things “science” still can’t totally explain, but relying on mythology of faith, could gather some wisdom in science as well. Like well, what IS the universe, or universes,, and where did it all start??? NOT 6,000 years ago in literal days.
Faith, like science, should be an exploration of the universe and our place in it. We should be constantly questioning our understanding of faith, religion and God. We should always be looking to expand our perception of the spiritual. It would be hubris of the highest order to say sooooo very limited humans have completely understood an omnipotent, omniscienct and omnipresent Being, capturing the essence within a single book and philosophy.
Michael – I think you have been mislead by the pseduo-scientists and philosophers that you rely on for your information. I would even go so far as to encourage you to continue your beliefs because they seem to serve you well.
I will say though that I am ever so glad that you and your like-minded people aren’t able to convince the school board in my community that your backward, and misguided ideas should be taught as science.
I honestly don’t care what people believe or teach in their homes to their children as long as they keep it to themselves. But the intellectual path you tread is a short one that goes nowhere and too often people like you think to thwart the education of the children around you.
Keep your bible, or Koran, or Talmud in your home and study it’s teachings with care. I wish you well in that endeavor.

There it is again — the attempt to elevate “belief” over knowledge. Think of all the gods for whom believers have slaughtered their neighbors. Then those gods fall out of favor and other, equally blood-thirsty ones (or one in the current fashion) take their place. But the intolerance, the determination to elevate easy belief over difficult knowledge, continues apace.
You can continue to believe that a creator created you for the sole purpose of having you kiss his behind for the rest of eternity, but if such a being exists (and I consider the universe too grand to have been created by your puny god) then we are here to judge him and his psychological and genocidal tendencies.
