Morning, Vagabonds. The Kevin Costner movie “Wyatt Earp” was accurate in the scene at the OK Corral, but horribly inaccurate at the shootout at Iron Springs, where Wyatt killed the notorious Curley Bill Brocious with a shotgun. The movie showed the rustlers ambushing the Earp posse from the rocks. In reality, the posse came upon the rustler camp by accident while the rustlers were sitting around a campfire, and everyone was surprised. The movie then shows Doc Holliday yelling, “Johnny Ringo!” before he shoots, causing Ringo to fall from the cliff dead. In reality, Johnny Ringo was not even present, as he was part of another posse being led by Sherrif Johnny Behan. Ringo’s death has always been a mystery. His body was found weeks after this event under a tree, with no boots on, his horse had strayed off, and Ringo had a single bullet wound in his head.
The biography, “Wyatt Earp, the Life Behind the Legend,” says that when Wyatt dismounted, he shotgunned Curley Bill, then tried to draw his pistol, but his gunbelt had slipped down to his thighs. He had to scramble to pull it back up again, while the rustlers were shooting at him. It was almost comical, as if he had been trying to pull his pants up. He then was able to shoot Johnny Barnes, mortally wounding him. One of the rustler’s bullets caught Wyatt on his boot’s heal, another broke his saddle horn, but Wyatt himself, again, was unharmed. When he got back on his horse, he discovered that his compatriots had all scampered away, and he himself had to retreat for his life. Quite different from the movie scene.

David, I am really enjoying your tales of Wyatt Earp. He was a fascinating character, to say the least.
Weather here has been in the mid 60’s all week with lows around 40. I’m enjoying it while it lasts because we have another storm coming soon.
