I find it hard to believe our “allies” aren’t all spying on each other. You don’t think France is spying on Germany and vice versa?!? Even in a friendly poker game with all my buds, I’d still like to know what cards they’re holding.
Michael, read “The Quiet American” also highly recommend his “The Comedians” about what happened in Haiti, speaking of French colonial influence and outcomes!
If our “allies” behind closed doors are doing/saying the same thing they say in public, then what’s the harm in confirming that with a little “intel”. On the other hand, what happens if we find out they’re “bluffing” in public. I consider that to be a national security issue and a welcome advantage. By the way, I don’t play cards because there is NO such thing as a “friendly game” when money is involved :-) I read your posts and generally agree with you. However in this case I think it’s naive to assume that “allies” all have the same vested interest. My wife and I don’t agree on everything so how can we expect our “allies” to be in unison all the time. I simply believe it’s an effective tool to ensure we’re all on the same page. Frankly I suspect they’re as pissed as they are because we caught ‘em doing just that. Saying one thing in public and working against that statement in private. How DARE you spy on me (caught me doing something didn’t ’ya).

My mistake. I did notice that the times I was in France. Lots of Germans in Speedos on the beaches. My eye sight hasn’t recovered fully….

Yeah, but we stiffed France on the huge debt we ran up in the Revolutionary War.

Yes, and those private investors saw the tremendous growth potential of the United States. If we only could do it again…
