Years ago I was in the Air Force in Japan and went to Tokyo with a friend for a few days. We were both country boys and had slept in beds full of cousins many a time so we got a room with a double bed because it was cheaper. The desk clerk called his staff up to have a look at us and everyone snickered.
I remember cartoons and movies from the old days showing men sharing a bed, and there was no snark involved. Lincoln often slept with the soldier guarding him. Today “sleeping with someone” has a strong implication.
