Ted Cruz said recently that what we really need is 100 Jesse Helms.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wu6ULIDbw-0The man who called the University of North Carolina the Univ of Negroes and Communists; the man who filibusterd 16 days to protest MLK day; 14 days to protest the US sanctions against apartheid in South Africa; the man who sang “Dixie” in the face of the first black woman senator after boasting to Orrin Hatch, “I’m going to make her cry.”According to Mr. Cruz, we need 100 more just like him.^Mitch simply isn’t conservative enough.I guess he’s just too civil and respectful to be a republican anymore.Amazedly,C.
I’m sorry, PAJ, but I don’t understand. Several conservative groups have spoken against Mr. McConnell for his ‘liberal bias’. Do you believe Mr. Mc to be liberal? As far as using Mr. Cruz’s very recent comments as an example of why the extreme right considers Mr. Mc to be too liberal, it seemed both timely and appropriate. Though my last sentence in that comment was probably unnecessarily sarcastic. But for Mr. Cruz, a man with Presidential aspirations and a leading voice among conservatives to raise Mr. Helms up as what America needs in 2014 or 16 is, in my opinion, much more ‘trollish’ than my simple statements of fact.I guess I just gave you an “aw nuts” moment.Sorry, but I have to call them the way I see them.Respectfully,C.
Which “he sang Dixie” story you believe is based on where you get your news. Not really. He told Orrin Hatch he was going to make Sen. Mosely-Braun cry before he got on the elevator. If that story doesn’t convince you, what about the one where he literally turned his back on Nelson Mandela when he visited the Capitol? Helms opposed sanctions against the apartheid regime in South Africa. Helms cut his teeth in politics by managing the campaign of a Senate candidate. He used blatantly racist messages, accusing Frank Graham of supporting, “the mingling of races.” He distributed a campaign flyer showing Graham’s wife dancing with a black man.Helms referred to Civil Rights protesters as “moral degenerates” & thought it was funny to privately refer to any black male as, “Fred”.I can see that you would like some of Helms’ positions, but the man was an unabashed racist. Cruz should have known better.
