It’s strange, this didn’t happen in Germany. Maybe because our coal was so deep? At least that kept the water clean. The air was a problem in steel-towns, but people complained, laws were written, filters installed and the problem solved.

    -

I worked (as IT-guy) at a coal-fired “backup power” plant for a while. The amount of filtering and cleaning is unbelievable! Taken by “volume” of the plant I’d say about 70% was to protect the environment, only 30% to generate power. But it still was profitable! “Clean coal” doesn’t exist if you take CO2 into consideration, but if you HAVE to burn coal there are ways it doesn’t has to kill your children…

Coal is the cheapest source of energy if one disregards all externalities.

In the UK, smoke from coal killed some cattle, and the UK government put strong restrictions on burning coal for heat.

In Manchuria, the provincial government banned individuals warming their homes with coal, so the smoke from the coal is out in the countryside, and the air is clean in the cities.

Meanwhile, China (outside Manchuria), and the US are both building more and more coal plants.

^1950’s London, “coal” killed a whole bunch of people! Yes, then they changed the laws, and cleaned things up.

As “Morty” says, “clean” coal is a myth, but we can do better to clean it up, as he also noted. But hey, the Koch’s need to replace yachts like folks used to replace cars. However, it also interesting that one of the Koch’s foundations provides funding for Nova on PBS, yes, interesting indeed.

Good sweet Christ, please give some of these deniers some wisdom! (Specifically: Magnaut, jack, and Bud Borchert)
Coal burning is dangerous any number of ways.
We are NOT entering a cooling period, Bud. And you misspelled “Arctic” as well as getting your facts wrong.
Michael, the air is not “clean” anywhere in China. Believe me, I’ve been in Hong Kong and Beijing recently.
Have you heard of the Brown Cloud? Some estimates say that effects of the Cloud kill up to two million Indians a year. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_brown_cloud)

How much is a “good job” worth? If the Koch Bros offered you $1,000,000 a year but you had to kill all your kids and cut off your wife’s feet, would you take the job?

But here is the rub. Say you are running at 98% efficiency great right? But Now the EPA with Obama “saving the world” and “for our own good” Now you have to spend a few more million of so here and there to bring it up to 99% and that 1% is for the children don’t you know and the evil R just know that the 1% that will improvement will kill you if you do not do it, that is what they want.
