Three strikes would work if it was enforced as originally intended; three strikes and then execution. But no, the liberals had to change it to life and now they blame the overcrowding on the law.

Florida has a 10, 20, Life law regarding felons who have guns.I know one guy in for 20 because a traffic stop turned up a gun.

The prison systems, and lack of judicial “options” in right-wing idiot areas, where laws are black and white, and stupid all over, makes the U.S. a laughingstock to even some “repressive” regimes! “Three strikes” is stupid if anything other than violent felonies are involved, and yes, most such do NOT limit to said violent crimes and misdemeanors DO count!

As to prisons themselves, states that have turned the system over to privates, like Texas and Arizona, have higher escape rates, and haven’t really reduced costs, just salaries for guards, while the operators of the contract rake in huge profits. Being a prison guard sucks as a job, and paying minimum wage guarantees you get the worst of the worst taking them. California may indeed pay more, but it retains folks psychologically capable of doing the job right.

I suggest everyone try working as a Correctional Officer for a year. It isn’t easy and everyone cannot do it. Check the starting pay for a Federal Correctional Officer. It isn’t near $100,000 a year.

While you may not be harmless, it is also true that it is unlikely that you are going out and joining a gang of active 25 year old criminals either. The idea of keeping a very elderly person in prison for a crime they committed in their youth is not only at least somewhat inhumane, it is also very expensive to the taxpayer. And at least some studies of such prisoners have shown that a majority of them would actually prefer a quick execution to continued existence in prison. Not a very good recommendation for such a policy for society in general, or even mankind as a whole!!

Did you even read your own post?Maybe you and mechanicboy can do some “research” together.—————————————-This IS the current Ca 3 strikes law……Revises the three strikes law to impose life sentence only when the new felony conviction is “serious or violent”..Authorizes re-sentencing for offenders currently serving life sentences if their third strike conviction was not serious or violent and if the judge determines that the re-sentence does not pose unreasonable risk to public safety..Continues to impose a life sentence penalty if the third strike conviction was for “certain non-serious, non-violent sex or drug offenses or involved firearm possession”..Maintains the life sentence penalty for felons with “non-serious, non-violent third strike if prior convictions were for rape, murder, or child molestation.”

Right. That’s why I commented on the CURRENT Ca law which I’m pretty sure was the point of he toon.I was commenting on the fact that Some people act like the 3 strikes law is for parking tickets or smoking a joint. These criminals must have previously TWICE committed a heinous act on another person AND instead of thanking God that they are somehow out of prison, decide that MORE crime would be a wise choice,If you truly don’t mind a guy like that living next door to your family, then you are a bigger gambler than I.

Read my FIRST comment slowly so that you can understand that I already discussed why CA prisons are overcrowded.Maybe you should research the comment section before you “research” Wikipedia.

There is a minimum security prison less than a mile from my house, folks who’ve served hard time elsewhere, and are close to release, make up a significant part of the population, as do those who committed relatively minor “drug crimes”.

My nephew, after serving with LAPD and LA county sheriff’s, is now a jailer/prison guard in California. Their system IS terribly overcrowded, and like here, it’s largely relatively minor, NON-violent criminals filling the cells. Mandatory sentencing is a part of the problem.

As to salaries, there’s no way I’d want their jobs guarding these folks, for the relative pittance they get, especially if working for any of the private contractors!!
