Gramma Evie: What did your teacher DO with the crawdad we released? Alix: Took it to our classroom so we can observe it. Gramma Evie: So...all's well that ends well. Alix: She said to tell you what you did was against the law. Gramma Evie: Hey, YOU brought the crawdad home from the lake! Alix: Oh, sure, blame the kid.

And no respect for her elders Alix is showing.

Considering that many pet stores sell Procambrus clarksii crawdads as pets I have to agree with Alix that bringing it home was a lot less of an issue than releasing it in the creek, and releasing it was entirely Evie’s idea.

@snarkm: that wasn’t the teacher, that was a marine biologist.

Hmmm,
I didn’t know the Marines even employed biologists. :)
Sorry, couldn’t resist.

is it going to have mutant babies, like the hamster/rat “hamrat” accident?

This story line is based on a true story, but it was not the grandmother who released the crawdad, it was the teacher, and there was more than one released. It involved a class in Oregon State, they were studying the imported crayfish, and when the class was over, rather than destroy them, the whole class released they into a tributary to the John Day River, where they are replacing the native species.

I think Evie should go visit Arnold QUICKLY! Where is he now — Haiti, South Africa?

Yeah, we sure don’t want a wild animal running around in the wild. The horror.

I’m sure Evie thought it would be better to release Pinchy than have him/her end up dead in a shoe box. Alix has had more than a few bugs die in little boxes that she made into an “environment” for them. Now she knows that she should leave critters in their natural habitat and observe and release.

look on the bright side. if pinchy is pregnant, as least they picked her up before there were a whole bunch of little pinchys around.

Sorry girls.

Evie should have known better than to introduce a noxious species into an environment that isn’t theirs to begin with. She knew Alix was always bringing home different creatures, and should have checked out Alix to see if she was going to take home a creature she shouldn’t have… ;)

RE: If there were such a thing as a PC atlas, I wonder if the Indian Ocean would be listed as the “Native American Ocean”? No, it would be the South Asian Ocean.

“NO PC here, just the facts” ????
Even when the facts are made to fit the theories, are misreported and fudged? No one is arguing about basic traffic laws. Just the ever growing government regulations that are ruining small business operations.
It just seems that every time somebody “takes offense” at something…instead of just simply disagreeing, they go to court to get a judgment in their favor; or to a lawmaker to get them to legislate on it.People are just too “sensitive” to their RIGHTS .For example—-if I were to buy alcohol or tobacco, I’m expected to show ID to prove I’m over 18/21. If they DARE TO ask me to prove who I am when I go to vote…I’m entitled to be sensitive and complain about it even though I show my ID for many other reasons.PC is everywhere, and totally out of control.

The rule should be now — Alix does NOT bring home stuff that she can’t take care of. Let her set up and aquarium at home and stock it properly because it will either have to be taken back where it came from or it will die. She’s not too young to learn that. She needed a lecture — she sneaked it home .
