My favorite dog in the car was when a local guy would take his St Bernard for a ride in his sports car. The dog would sit up in the front passenger seat. The car was right hand drive.
If I fasten the passenger seat belt before I let my dog in the car, when she climbs in she does a little turn and ends up behind the shoulder harness. Smart dog. I didn’t teach her that trick.

Maybe that’s why I forgot to mention the car I saw was in North America where almost all cars are left hand drive..Also, the car in question was relatively rare.Seeing someone driving a Morgan on the street in the US is unusual, especially a right hand drive one..But a Morgan which appears to be driven by a St Bernard wearing doggles, is enough to stop traffic.
Ditto a lot of the comments – I know that it’s just a cartoon and it’s a lot of fun to see dogs enjoy a car ride, but if you truly love your pet, you should keep his safety in mind. The safest place for a dog is in a dog seat belt in the rear seat. The second safest place is on the floor of the passenger seat (in an accident or a sudden stop, the dog is in a sheltered alcove). If you want your dog to be able to put his schnoz in the breeze, they actually sell products that you can put in the window to direct the wind into the car. (Can’t remember where I saw it, but if you want one, I’d start your search with either Skymall, Hammacher Schlemmer, or Doctors Foster and Smith.
I’m glad the commenters realize how dangerous most of the cartoonist’s scenarios are. Only the one with the dog behind the bars (the prisoner) shows a reasonably safe situation. Dogs in the front seat will be killed by the airbag if it goes off. Loose dogs in the back will go flying in an accident or hard stop. No dog’s head should be out the window of a moving car – it could be struck by something, and even eye damage can occur from insects, wind, or small flying debris.

I often wonder if the people who drive with their dogs on their laps would do the same thing with a Baby.
First of all, the dog can get in the way of your driving and cause an accident.
Second, the accident could kill you both and anyone else involved.
When I see this I wish I was a cop so that I could ticket them for reckless driving.

Here in Portland, OR a woman recently was cited and ticketed for driving with her dog on her lap. It’s not safe for either the person or the animal.
