Having visited many places where rail really works and moves hundreds of thousands, even millions, daily, I believe that in it and its value. All transport has hazards, especially in areas prone to earthquake or flooding. Resisting proven ideas because of initial costs or potential hazards only makes learning from the mistakes of others more valuable. My grandfather said intelligent people learn from their own mistakes, but wise people learn from the mistakes of others. Sadly, it seems that greedy people just repeat the mistakes and protect themselves from being sued for doing so.Respectfully,C.
Why have a high speed train if it is going to stop every 75 or 100 miles. You will have slow down time before the stop and then have to get up to speed after starting. Tis makes sense ONLY if the train will be non-stop between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
It is too hard to get the land for rail nowadays. Or even for roads sometimes.Where I used to work US 41 ran by. They wanted to widen that road but a bar owner refused to sell for less than a million bucks. The solution was to reroute the road a block over so now the bar is on a rarely travelled road, taxpayers saved, and my favorite sub shop was bulldozed instead.
Like Bruce, though I am conservative, I am making an effort to stop labeling people. There are and were good liberals – the late Rep. Mo Udall, Dennis Kucinich (sp), the late Rep. Daniel Monyihan who are thoughtful and truly compassionate people. I don’t agree with their political views, but recognize that they were/are individuals of character.
I am happily trying to help my fellow Americans see the fact that liberals are putting our country on to the road of destruction.Btw I’m not making that up.
If the old railroad grants had been enforced to make railroads upgrade and maintain lines to keep up with technology, instead of becoming oil companies exploiting their mineral resources GIVEN to them to operate “in perpetuity” rail service, we’d have had quality, cheap, high speed rail decades ago, like Japan and Europe.
I rode the “bullet train” in Japan in 1967, it was a great way to travel, but back home, freight took command over “passenger rail”, and we all lost.

Great book. The Future is not what it used to be.Where’s my Wheel In Space, as shown in Elysium? (Actually, it was in 2001: A Space Odyssey first.)

Lisa usually hates anything under a Democrat, such as President Obama or Governor Brown. Is she for or against the bullet train?
