FEBRUARY 3,1964. “Louie, Louie” by the Kingsmen is declared to be “pornographic” by Indiana governor Matthew Welsh, who asks Indiana radio stations to stop playing the tune. The governor’s request will intensify the debate over whether the song does contain sexual references, a question clouded by the fact that no one will be able to say for certain exactly what the Kingsmen’s lyrics are.
That small problem notwithstanding, the Whatcom County, Wash. county council will pass a resolution in 1985 recommending that “Louie, Louie” by the Washington based Kingsmen-be proclaimed the official Washington state song, a recommendation that won’t garner much attention outside the county.

The really neat part is that we lived in both Indiana and Whatcom County, WA, and we see how this could be true in both places….
