If couples put as much work into the marriage as they do the wedding there would be less divorce in this country. You don’t have to spend a fortune on a wedding, $100 bucks for a preacher and a nice place to say your vows and you are married, why spend $50,000 and you get the SAME result, you are married.
My wife and I were married by the JP (Justice of the Peace), who was also a minister of a small church, as soon as I got back from my 3rd (and last) tour of Vietnam. My best friend in the Marines and his GF were the witnesses. I wore my uniform, my bride had on a nice dress and the JP’s wife got us all pizza, afterward. Still married and happy 42 years later. Cost? $25 for the license and another $25 for the JP. Pizza and cokes were free as the JPs wife managed a pizza parlor. It isn’t the ceremony, it’s the people in it.
My dad paid and I got myself ready picked out my dress and bouquet (and made my own veil of all silk tulle, embroidered by my own hand 360 on edges). Dad threw the reception at a nice downtown restaurant after the celrmony (in Spanish and Latin) at Holy Name Cathedral. He invited a lot of business associates and we had family. Oh, and I had printed invites, but the cards for reception were hand calliged by me.
I HAD told him that I did not “love” him and that his love had to be sufficient, but I was 21 and it “was time” to be married and have children. Married in 59, 4 kids by 64, divorced in 75that’s it. Then I met the man I still love (who it seems will always be ambivalent about me) but he’s someone good and honest and still hard-working (even tho’ he’ll be 75 this month).
We’ll never really live together (unless he buys an RV to take trips all over the country- he has mentioned) because I have too much invested in this house to move (but would always love to join him).
This is what my wife’s friend is going through for her daughter. She chose a “western/redneck/cowboy/hillbilly” theme! We were married by “Marrying Sam” , a local JP , 30 years this October. I asked to take off work that Friday and I guess that was lucky because we had a dickens of a time finding somewhere to have our blood tested for the license. The only person to be found was “Doc Haney” MD who was my mothers doctor at my birth! Hands were a little shakey but he got us tested.

It’s every romantic/princes/happy-ending/fairytale/someday-my-prince-will-come dream they’ve had since childhood. They ain’t gonna skimp on that.
