May 24, 2011, I inadvertently drove GypsyWagon into the midst of EF 4-5 tornadoes at El Reno, OK, just west of Oklahoma City. According to the time line I must have missed getting wiped out by minutes and probably less than 1/4 mile. Next day the devastation was astonishing – the most severe recorded tornadoes in the El Reno area to that date. Cattle dead in the fields but only eight lives lost, thanks to being mainly rural. One never knows when your number comes up or you dodge a bullet.
Listening to the stories of these folks after repeated damage from “natural events” they are aware of, saying they will rebuild does speak to their “nature”.
But with fires, floods, tornadoes, and hurricanes, and yes earthquakes out here in the west, it should be noted that it is NOT “Mother Nature” that does the damage, it is the man-made things that are both destroyed, and cause most of the destruction. (Like debris blown on the winds that does the most damage, poor building codes, dams and levees that allow people to build in flood plains, etc.)
Nature is just Nature, and not deserving of “blame” for human folly, often considered “determination”.
