They have. Naturally, vertically, one generation at a time. They have managed to breed by this method a strain of wheat which is very productive, but not terribly digestable. However, it’s ‘natural’, as natural, say, as monkshood, which is very pretty, but very toxic.
There is nothing natural about GMO plants or animals at all. Those are bred horizontally; the genetic material from one species or animal transferred to a totally different plant or animal. They are crossing the plant/animal barrier in the labs, in fact. Very clever of them.
But … is it useful? If so, to whom? .
Every couple of millenia or so, Mother Nature manages to cross two unrelated species, but She doesn’t make a habit of it. She doesn’t do it in a lab, and may well consider it a blunder of epic stature when it happens.

GMO is not a natural process, period.
