Morning, VistaBill, 60sFan, Night-Gaunt, and others!I always thought Stellaluna and Retik were obsessed with the moon people, and it looks like I may be right.

You said, "They won’t believe Deit when he tells them the Moon colony is gone and the city is smashed.’-————————Diet Smith’s official story has been that the Space Coupes haven’t all been mothballed because of technical reasons, so he doesn’t want anyone knowing that at least one is operational. And he couldn’t reveal what he knows about Moon Valley without exposing his secret flight back to the moon.Mind you, I’m expecting a Space Coupe to be stolen, and Moon Maid to make a one-way trip “home.”

I posted this yesterday kind of late, and I’m not sure how many saw it. It regards Moon Maid and Sparkle, who used to be good friends. In 1968 alone, Sparkle won a Moon Maid lookalike contest, vacationed on the moon with her family and Moon Maid, flew around in air cars with Moon Maid, and even dressed up like Moon Maid. Not sure if any of that history will matter now that Mysta thinks Sparkle has “her” husband, especially since we discovered yesterday that Mysta is stalking Sparkle. Here are some scenes of Mysta and Sparkle together in the good ’ol days:Mysta & Sparkle – Friends Forever?

After seeing Dr. Sail’s eyes, I’m thinking, if Stellaluna and Retik are moon people, he might be one too.

Hmm, Diet Smith may be in on this? Or are Sail and Ghote just stupid and think that Diet will sign off on use of a space coupe? i’m thinking the latter.

As for retik and stellaluna? i’m telilng ya.. theyre some sort of whacked out “moon cult” probably left over from the hubbub of the moon era

i betcha it was THEM who retrieved whatever dna samples of moon maid were left after she got sprayed all over the pavement like a picasso on canvas

Still waiting for Mumbles. Unfinished business from 1979 was Zy Ghote’s intended swindle of Diet Smith. Tongue in cheek when I say Mumbles, though the EJs cut-away doesn’t put that completely out of the question – but I fully expect a major crime to be pulled by the old Ghote, and pretty soon…

Still convinced that the good doctor is still a fraud, i’ll add to Sullie’s (tsull2121) speculation that it was Stellaluna and Retik who pulled Mysta’s body out of the car – or the morgue, or wherever – I’m guessing that Mysta’s grave contains an empty coffin!

    My thoughts, so far…

    (1) Retik/Sellaluna are not “moon people”, but rather a couple of groupies/fans who will do nearly anything to get to the moon.(2) I agree with our friend tsull2121 that since there’s little doubt Moon Maid was blown-up in the late 70’s, perhaps these two scooped-up some remains for Dr. S. Tim Sail tomess-around with.(3) Assuming MM was “completely incinerated” in the explosion, I believe the burial was that of an empty coffin — that’s a story yet to be told, and I am betting cheapskate0 isn’t too far off the mark.(4) I think there’s still a lot Diet Smith isn’t telling us…

To the ones who wrote yesterday about ads, and Ad-block. I will make a note you can also tell it to filter what types of ads you do not wish. I have mine to filter ONLY pop-*, and dynamic ads myself. All Static ads are let though. Thank the great spirit I did. It was this site who alerted me to the “Complete Dick Tracy” of the IDW company, and it was a static ad.

You may wish to consider this, GoComics. Do not use ads that annoy – even if there is no ad blocker, chances are annoying ads will drive people /away/.

Last night I was reading the Gould story which introduced Groovy Grove to the strip. Groovy was sort of a “hippy” cop who was a romantic interest for Lizz in the strip for several years. Groovy slipped and fell off of a fire escape while trying to apprehend a gunman known as The Cypher and married Lizz on his deathbed.

Chester Gould must have been psychic. Not only did he introduce the wrist radio/TV decades before the advent of cell phones, in the Groovy story he introduces “the police uniform of the future.” Although Sam, Lizz, and the Chief had a great laugh at how ridiculous the uniform looked (this was 1970 when the story was written), it looks remarkably like the uniforms worn by modern-day SWAT teams. Still, it was futuristic science fiction at the time.

In the original Dr. Zy Ghote story (1979). Tracy confronted the possibility of cloning during a time when most people had never heard the word “clone.” In the original Purdy Fallar tale (1968), Gould introduced Tracy to cryogenics and the re-animation of frozen bodies long before anyone took this process seriously in the least.

Gould explained that although the Moon civilization was more technically advanced than Earth, they had not developed space travel because of the lack of titanium. This was BEFORE the Apollo missions. Today, titanium is used to build lightweight hulls for spacecraft. Today we know that titanium DOES exist on the Moon but is combined with basalt in extremely low quality as to be useless and nearly impossible to extract. Gould got it right again.

I don’t expect to see cops zooming around in flying trash cans in real life, but a couple of days ago I read an article in USA Today about a company inventing a 2-person flying car. Flying Car And scientists are currently studying the use of magnetism in space travel. Magnetic Fields and Space Travel

Those who complain that the strip should avoid the science-fiction aspects and concentrate on more “urban crime” do not understand the importance science-fiction has played in the history of the strip or how many of Gould’s sci-fi ideas have actually become reality.

I know I’ll get clobbered for this but I’ll put in my 2 cents worth anyway.

It was because of science fiction like personal trips to the moon that I and probably many other people stopped following Dick Tracy. It is sad to see this returning. My image of Dick Tracy is not someone flying on the moon.

Does her face need to heal because of:1) Injuries from the car bomb?2) Plastic surgery to make a different lunar woman look like Mysta?3) Is the healing a fake and she’s really okay after all? I remember Mysta asked Dr. Sail why she wasn’t allowed to see her face and it made me wonder.I kind of think it’s #1.

Old Tracy and 9ChickLuannbean represent certain people who are less than fond of Moon Maid. And their complaints are not totally without merit.

Bringing us Moon Maid in the first place used a lot of “silly” science. And likely, it will take a bit more “silly” science to bring Mysta back from the grave – if, in fact, she was ever fit for the grave.

I’ve also read arguments about whether Dick Tracy has, or ought to have, dabbled in the realm of science fiction. One post I read even suggested that the two-way wrist radio was a reality back in 1939, when it was introduced. I don’t think so; in 1939, vacuum tubes were still on the rise as the transistor wouldn’t be invented for another twenty years.

But it’s not good enough to simply say, Dick Tracy is a science fiction comic strip. Old Tracy has a point when he or she expresses the fear that the strip is turning into Flash Gordon!

By the by, I was far more alarmed by the Cinnamon Knight story than the Moon Maid. As a spoof of Batman, I didn’t mind it. But I don’t look forward to seeing the characters again. Why? Same fear as Old Tracy: Flash Gordon!

In the end, I think the main problem is, Staton and Curtis have decided to bring back a once popular character – a character who still appears to have a lot of appeal. The problem is, where she came from, as well as where she comes from again, stretches the envelope of what is expected from what is otherwise a rather pedestrian cops-and-robbers story line.

Those of us who want the real Mysta’s return aren’t hoping and praying for Junior’s marriage to be broken up. It’s just that the real Mysta has a story to tell, and we’d like to hear it.

Food for thought: While Mike and Joe are bringing back an admittedly improbable character, they are doing so in a decidedly measured manner. For instance, while there will be a Moon Maid, there will be no colony on the moon. Another example: Diet Smith can still get to the moon, but there are no regularly scheduled flights – among other things, Diet has told the rest of the world that his space coupes are grounded.

In other words, I think Tracy land is going to be safe from flying garbage cans, and quite likely, the Moon Governor, as well. I don’t know about anyone else, but storylines I read that included Moon Governor painted him as both treacherous and manipulative. Likely, Mysta, Honey, and the strip are going to be better off without him.

Last, and certainly least: I still think the old Ghote, the good doctor, is an even better fraud. I still don’t think he can clone a toenail. And I still think he’s after Diet Smith’s millions, same as back in 1979.

So, yes, count me as one who believes the present Mysta is, in fact, the original Moon Maid. All that’s left is to tell us how she survived the bomb, as well as where she was and why she was unable to contact anyone for the last however many years it has been.

But perhaps the biggest reason I believe this is going to be the “real” Mysta: Staton and Curtis have risked offending those who feel, for one reason or another, that the strip was better off without her. By coming up with any kind of imposter for Mysta, to include a “clone,” Mike and Joe risk offending those who have been pulling for her return.

A “fake” Mysta would be a lose-lose proposition. This is the corner they are painted into.

The cat’s out of the bag, there will be someone called “Mysta” in the strip. Anti-Moon Era fans are already threatening to “check out.” Now that we’ve been teased with the return of Mysta, a fake could cause the rest of us to “check out,” as well.

That’s not a situation that Team Tracy or Tribune Media want to see play out.

Well, that’s my humble opinion, and I’m sticking to it!

Well, Willie007, it’s like I said in more than one post, including today’s: Moon Maid is coming back, but Mike and Joe are doing it in a decidedly measured manner. Moon Maid, yes, but moon colony, no!

And again, in my humble opinion, Moon Governor is a character that the strip can live without. Moon madness aside, his character, as painted by Gould, Fletcher, and Collins, was not a positive one.

Gould introduced him as the man who imprisoned Dick Tracy and Diet Smith in order to extort space coupes or titanium.

Fletcher-Collins “outroduced” him by, instead of attending the funeral of his own daughter, or even sending condolences, but by having him cut all ties to earth.

I just hope that Mysta and Honey aren’t too upset by these developments.

Oh, yeah – I almost forgot – Moon Maid, now known as Mysta, “rebelled” against her father, even drugging him and others to allow Tracy and Junior’s escape.

(How many times did Moon Governer imprison Tracy and others? Heck if I know, but I still don’t like him)

So, Moon Maid, yes! Bring her on!

But I find myself in agreement with the anti-space folks when it comes to the rest of the moon people.
