@ APersonOfInterest:While I can;t say I was looking for it, I seemed to put myself in dangers way. More than once I was sure it was time to die, but I would come out virtually unscathed. Life was very interesting and I don’t have any real scars to show for it. The one thing I wish I’d never done is started smoking. Now I have COPD. Dumb thing to do. Had to be like the big guys.
Good morning Vagabonds. I met my blind Azeri friend at the Bol;t bus stop yesterday . And we went to Sbarro for a New York pizza. He told me that Baltimore’s pizza’s aren’t as good as the NY ones. I like pizza (plain, just cheese and onions) but I rarely eat them unless I’m with company.
I have not seen my friend in 7 years and now he’s a 21 yr old college grad with a nice job and apartment in Baltimore. His English is perfect right down to the expressions.It’s amazing that in spite of or because of his blindness, his hearing is great (he can hear water boil).. He followed me down the subway steps as long as he could hear me talk, so, with each step, I counted in Azeri.
He told me something I had not known: as a child he became a refugee, driven from his home in Nagorno Bakh during the Armenian- Azerbaijan war. I remember during my 1999 visit to Baku, seeing streets full of homeless refugees. There are 2 sides to this conflict.
He loved my DVDs of Azerbaijan music and films and had a whole set of jokes in his app (I guess that’s what you call it). Unfortunately, he can’t see pictures from my laptop but must use a special computer.
Tomorrow, lunch with his grandma and me at an Afghan restaurant.
Morning, Village.Today I’m going to Houston to watch the Inspiron Golf Tournament. It will be a Senior Tour Tournament, with such players as Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus, and Arnold Palmer.
@davidf42- The Seniors were here up the road from me @Hilton Head 2 weeks ago, glad your going- sooo much funas those guys have no pressure on them, as they have did it all in their comp. days. I have pictures from way back when of me & “Super MEX”- LEE & me with Gary Player.

I gained about thirty-five pounds, and found it very uncomfortable, So I slowly made my way back down to my comfort weight . As for alcohol, I won’t deny getting pretty snockered in my day, but I was really never much of a drinker. My last “overdose” was my B.day two years ago.at my 80th B’day. I was sitting with the bar owner and it was a busy Friday night, and it turned out that the owner told one of the bartenders that my shot glass was to stay filled. I only learned that later. My glass was full so I’d finish it and it would be full and I’d finish it and…..I don’t know how much Jack Daniels I drank that night, but I am sure it would have been a personal record.. Now I probably average less than one beer a week. And I feel them..
Good morning, Vagabonds. Yesterday I guided my blind friend to meet his grandmother in Yorkville (the Upper East Side). We took 3 trains to get there. His grandmother is staying with her daughter for sever months before going back to Azerbaijan. It was so beautiful how his grandmother greeted him after not seeing him for 7 years.
I tried to stay out of their way while they were conversing, but they were always including me. We were at a fantastic playground where kids were playing baseball, basketball, etc. all on the same field. Then we ate in an Afghan restaurant before returning home. The people in the crowded subways were so considerate – they kept offering my friend a seat when they saw his white cane and he always told them that I needed the seat more than he due to my bad leg and asthma.
At home I played a VHS tape that I had made of his aunts, uncles, parents and grandmother at a party in Baku 11 years ago. He was so happy hearing the voices I made him a DVD copy.
Today we plan to go to the Russian market in Brighton Beach (Little Odessa) as well as a fantastic restaurant, Baku Palace, with his grandmother. I wish his visit wasn’t so short – I’m learning how to be guide him.
We’re having “church in the park” today. Once a year in the spring – before the weather gets too hot – we have our church service in a local park. Looks like today is going to be a perfect day for it.
I don’t know if I told you,but my son is doing much better. He’s got a phenomenal boss who is being very supportive. He’s out of the hospital, taking proper meds and in therapy.
