Joan: Here are Luci's bottles and formula. That should get you through the 10 days.
Val: When did you wean her?
Joan: It's been 9 days and she's doing GREAT.
Val: 9 DAYS?!?
Joan: She loves this stuff. Really.
Luci: PTUI!
The American pediatric guidelines recommend nursing for at least a year. Yes, the at least is not a typo. If anyone tells you differently they aren’t quoting real facts. The WHO recommends at least 24 months.
I don’t think that’s a 9-day-old baby. Rather, she’s claiming that the baby has gotten used to formula instead of milk – but it’s unlikely that 9 days is enough to make the switch.
I’m guessing Lucy is younger than a year, though, as it would be pretty stupid to use formula (and from bottle!) for an older child, unless she is allergic to normal cow milk.
Hah – one of my sisters did this to my sister-in-law, only it was 2 days!! Luckily both the child and the SIL are go-with-the-flow people and it worked out relatively okay, but the SIL never took that sister’s kids again for a long weekend!!
A recent Simpson’s episode, had Marg dealing with a group of really radical women who breast feed their children. She referred to them as nipple Nazis.
Actually, most of the time, it will be Grandma dealing with it as Val will be at work. Then, Holly and Alix after school. Ahhh, yes , the next 10 days will be FUN!!!!
@vanpelt Since when does “weaned” mean “switched from breast feeding to a bottle”? It means “switched from sucking liquid to eating mush”.I thought the same thing!
Weaning is the process of gradually introducing a mammal infant to what will be its adult diet and withdrawing the supply of its mother’s milk.
The process takes place only in mammals, as only mammals produce milk. The infant is considered to be fully weaned once it no longer receives any breast milk (or bottled substitute).
The main point is to withdraw the supply of mother’s milk. Lucy has probably been drinking formula, unless Joan can supply 10-days worth of mother’s milk! (Ouch) lol
I’ve never been a parent, but I’ve had friends who used a breast pump when their babies didn’t take to the breast for whatever reason. I guess Joan couldn’t pump enough breast milk to cover 10 days, though! :(
If your child bites you (both of mine did at some point), you teach him not to bite. If your child sucks too hard, you start using correct nursing technique. Lots of excuses just so that moms could run away from their babies. I only haven’t seen the classic “I didn’t have enough milk after 3 months” yet.

Uh, isn’t Luci supposed to be nearly two, or even three by now?? That’s really sick, Joan. Trying for the cover of Time Magazine, are we??

I don’t want to think about what Val is going to do in desperation in a couple of days.

Ah yes, our typical Joan. Totally ignoring reality.

I nursed mine for six and nine months respectively. My girls all nursed their children for about a year each.

Just go to Paris and have fun. Your kid will probably still be here when you get back.

Lucy is pre-toddler in comic time. Does not sound like 2 years to me. But how man do 24 months these days?

If I remember correctly, Luci was born in 2007. It’s about time she was weaned! :)

For a lot of people, switching to formula is EXACTLY what ‘weaning’ means.
