Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

NINE DAYS?! I’m no parent, but when are you really s’posed to wean?

The American pediatric guidelines recommend nursing for at least a year. Yes, the at least is not a typo. If anyone tells you differently they aren’t quoting real facts. The WHO recommends at least 24 months.

I don’t think that’s a 9-day-old baby. Rather, she’s claiming that the baby has gotten used to formula instead of milk – but it’s unlikely that 9 days is enough to make the switch.

And judging from Luci’s (adorable but I am not holding her) expression, 9 days is not NEAR enough time. Meltdown in ten…nine…eight….(episodes)….

Uh, isn’t Luci supposed to be nearly two, or even three by now??
That’s really sick, Joan. Trying for the cover of Time Magazine, are we??

I’m guessing Lucy is younger than a year, though, as it would be pretty stupid to use formula (and from bottle!) for an older child, unless she is allergic to normal cow milk.

@Jenn
time doesn’t go that fast in Stone Soup. Holly and Alix don’t grow older. Anyway I think 9 days should do it, didn’t take all that long with my three kids.

Yeah, it looks like she loves it!! The babysitters better each get a beautiful, expensive gift from Paris!!!

@Jenn
A lot of women where I live nurse their children into or even through their toddler years. A lot depends on both the mother and the child. My oldest self-weaned at 9 months, and I weaned my youngest at around 7-8 months (she was a biter).

None of the kids age a day. Max is still 2 years old and he’s from Joan’s previous marriage!

Hah – one of my sisters did this to my sister-in-law, only it was 2 days!! Luckily both the child and the SIL are go-with-the-flow people and it worked out relatively okay, but the SIL never took that sister’s kids again for a long weekend!!

A recent Simpson’s episode, had Marg dealing with a group of really radical women who breast feed their children. She referred to them as nipple Nazis.

Since when does “weaned” mean “switched from breast feeding to a bottle”? It means “switched from sucking liquid to eating mush”.

I don’t want to think about what Val is going to do in desperation in a couple of days.

Ah yes, our typical Joan. Totally ignoring reality.
