Whatever happened to the “If they see our prosperity, they’ll want to be like us” meme? With the fall of the Soviet Union, our government has blown a great opportunity to help a neighbor. Maybe with this next leadership change in Cuba, we can try to start “normalizing” relations again.

the u.s. will never make peace with cuba. the only example of true democracy cannot be allowed to continue, and we can not be allowed to see the truth.

Edinbaltimore is closest to the mark so far. It was suggested to me that the reason Cuba is still closed is because Cubans who fled to America insist they be compensated for what they lost. Some even demand the return of houses and lands. ^I’ve heard the same argument from the Sioux and Cherokee, et al. Then there are the descendents of slaves and those persecuted under Jim Crow who want compensation.^Welcome to 2013, folks. What’s past is past. It is time to learn from history and move forward in ways that no only prevent us from repeating mistakes, but to make our ability to live together in peace and respect more likely and long lasting.^It’s time to make Cuba as easy to visit as Jamaica, Bermuda, and other Caribbean islands. Doing so will not only make life better for their people, and make the nation safer along the gulf coast, but American will get to rent really cool old cars to drive while visiting.Very few dictatorships survive open borders.Respectfully,C.

I have a hard time empathizing with Cubans who live in America and claim to love their pre-Castro homeland but are willing to starve their abandoned countrymen unless they agree to become another banana republic again.

Sometimes we confuse national borders and governments with the people who live in and under them.

Listening to WQBA (local radio station in Miami) and they’re going on a tirade how Jay-Z and Beyonce are supporting communism and such. And then the rest of us wonder why the Cubans are a bunch of crazy right wing Republicans.
