The conversion drives of the Catholics on the continents of Africa & South America were so successful in the past ( ahem ) that the shortage of priests in Europe are being fulfilled with priests from the SAmerica & Africa. They’re typically more conservative. In Austria’s rural Osttirol, seeing any Africans is pretty rare and usually they’re clergy. As the developed nations become more secular, whatever religious roles remain are going to be backfilled from developing nations. Soon there’s going to be another north-south divide: the secular north and religious south. Except in the USA where they’re still lagging behind Europe in the secular stakes.
Joel Pett nailed it. I’d been thinking that it’s a good thing Benedict waited until now to retire. If he’d retired last year, the American bishops could have used an African pope to pry American Catholic voters away from Obama.
They’ll pick another old European man in a frilly dress and keep doing the same things. Funny really since the cathedrals of Europe are mostly filled with picture-taking tourists and old ladies selling lottery tickets.
Despite being African and brought up in a Catholic environment, I’m indifferent to the going-ons of the Catholic church. I’m just posting this in the interest of the thread as it comes from a South African newspaper:As Africa rises, Europe loses grip on Catholic power base.

Maybe the new pope will not protect pedophiles. One can only hope.

‘Therefore, women will never be allowed to be priests. The Kingdom of God is a Patriarchy. It is headed up by a Man, the Son of God, who is King.’

Is it just because god does it or does god do it because it’s just?
