The Catholic church is in the same place as the Republican party… Stuck in thick and faulty theology.

Maybe the new pope will not protect pedophiles. One can only hope.

Sooner or later, ALL popes will come from Third World countries as the intelligent, educated West jettisons all outmoded religions and Catholicism becomes the exclusive property of the ignorant, uneducated, and superstitious.

The conversion drives of the Catholics on the continents of Africa & South America were so successful in the past ( ahem ) that the shortage of priests in Europe are being fulfilled with priests from the SAmerica & Africa. They’re typically more conservative. In Austria’s rural Osttirol, seeing any Africans is pretty rare and usually they’re clergy. As the developed nations become more secular, whatever religious roles remain are going to be backfilled from developing nations. Soon there’s going to be another north-south divide: the secular north and religious south. Except in the USA where they’re still lagging behind Europe in the secular stakes.

Joel Pett nailed it. I’d been thinking that it’s a good thing Benedict waited until now to retire. If he’d retired last year, the American bishops could have used an African pope to pry American Catholic voters away from Obama.

At least in the pedophile scandal, Benedict gets a bad rap. When you need to purge the ranks of sinners, an inquisitor is EXACTLY who you want. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/12/opinion/12douthat.html?_r=0

^ And when you need to purge the ranks of ghoulies and ghosties and long-legged beasties and things that go bump in the night, you need the world’s best exorcist:

Uh, what century is this again?

They’ll pick another old European man in a frilly dress and keep doing the same things. Funny really since the cathedrals of Europe are mostly filled with picture-taking tourists and old ladies selling lottery tickets.
