ronald rini: New York Times “won” a libel suit. The court said that unless you could actually produce a memo saying to libel, anyone “seeking public notoriety” by running for office had no recourse at law. “Public notoriety” has since been expanded to include merely writing a letter to the editor and having it published. My journalism “ethics” class emphasized when libeling someone, be sure and find this kind of “evidence”, then you can say anything without fear of punishment.
