I love that Mom knew Calvin & Hobbes well enough to realize she must run out and bring in Hobbes and the umbrella.

Being together is best! Hobbes has luck, that Mom is fetching him, waiting in coldness and rain is not healthy!!

Even if Hobbes isn’t real in universe to everyone who isn’t Calvin, this comic represents the beauty and longing of platonic friendship. How much you long for companionship when society and other things that halt your life will hurt you emotional.

@bigpianoguy: Actually, both Calvin and Hobbes are real. It’s only the readers who are imaginary.

The fact that in the last panel Hobbes is alone and alive pretty much proves that he isn’t a figment of Calvin’s admittedly hyperactive imagination.

Note that when Mom runs out in the rain to get Hobbes, it is the only panel that is in black and white. Removing the color actually focuses the reader’s attention on that panel.

Awwww! Mom may seem tough most of the time but she knows how much Calvin loves and needs Hobbes.

I remember those dreary rainy school days. They dragged on even longer than the average school day, punctuated by the soggy walk home.

Today’s comic for some reason really, really touched me deeply. I am actually in tears. Makes me treasure the moments coming up when my own children are going to imagine a world with friends like these.

Watterson says that Hobbes is really to Calvin, toy to everybody else. Reality is only as we see it.

“When Hobbes is a stuffed toy in one panel and alive in the next, I’m juxtaposing the ‘grown-up’ version of reality with Calvin’s version, and inviting the reader to decide which is truer.”8

Thank you Bill. I feel so sorry for anyone who didn’t have an ‘imaginary friend’ at Calvin’s age just as I feel sorry for anyone my age that doesn’t have a non-human friend to confide in. In one simple cartoon strip you remind me of my strengths and weaknesses.
