And all this time I thought it was Torville and Dean who skated to Ravel’s Bolero. Gee – she was a squirrel????

Don’t know where the East German judge gave RJ the thumbs up, but I think it might still be there.

Good thing it was the Australian judge who gave the thumbs-up. It means something different there.

D-squared: True, but there were still German judges who reached that status in the DDR..James Hamilton:The Jamaican bobsled team was considered a joke – until they beat both US teams. Then there was never a mention of them again in the corporate media.

and, weren’t all east germans informants and/or statsi agents? plus, the east germans really did bad things to female athletes.

The victory sign is with the palm facing outward. Palm facing inward is the other thing…preferably with a vertical jab.

vwdualnomand: Monitors more than just informants – to prevent escape. One or two may have been formally Statsi, but all citizens were expected to be informants, like Talon in the US, and probably just as ignored. They probably did dangerous things to male as well as female athletes. Katerina Witt had a few choice things to say about the latter.

I always considered Bolero to be a show-off exercise in orchestration. You do need to know something about music to fully appreciate it. We did it once starting with only a diffused spotlight on the flute, increasing the intensity of the lighting with the building of the piece, ending in blazing lights with the trombone smears. It helped make it a bit more understandable, although clobbering the electricity budget.

East Germany ceased to exist in 1990.
