Actually, the first one we had back in the 50s was fiberglass; the later ones were metal. The Internet is curiously silent on the history of saucer sleds, but I think I remember my father speaking of our first one as a new invention.

…or we would use trash can lids…if the handle was missing. Funny how those lid handles managed to dissapear in the winter.

You can also use one as the dome of a snow cave, if you live far enough north that you can build one in the first place.
