Could it be he also feared what looked like a shotgun pointed at him? (I haven’t heard any details in a while. Does anyone know if there actually was a gun in the van?)

There doesn’t seem to be any evidence of a shotgun, and other circumstances make the shooter’s story suspicious. However, the fact that the targeted van drove away before returning may provide enough reasonable doubt for a jury to acquit. But the more I learn about what goes on in jury rooms, the more I tend to question the whole jury-of-your-peers 12-good-men-and-true system. I’m told the saying is, “If you’re innocent, ask for a bench trial; if you’re guilty, ask for a jury trial.” But from what I’ve seen so far, I’d probably vote to convict.
