Q. What caused the demise of Hostess?
A. Mysteriously durable, polymer-like, sweetened isotopic spackle; encased in laboratory controlled, hydrogenated edible yellow foam.
B. Union workers.
If the union members think the company can make money, then why doesn’t the union reps buy the recipe and keep making them? Socialism only works as long as there is someone else to rob.
Debt. The vulture capitalists took a profit making company, loaded it with debt, and the market could no longer sustain the margins. Like Mitt wanted to do to America.
“The private-equity owners had loaded the company down with debt, the CEO had tripled his pay, the union had previously taken a big, big pay cut…” http://truth-out.org/opinion/item/12928-hostess-failure-not-unions-fault
@tigger,hostess is not necessary to national security. Heavy manufacturing, ie, the auto industry, is essential for national security. We need it to build our weapons of war – if we have another shooting war.without our heavy manufacturing, who you gonna buy weapons from for the next big war? China? Korea? Japan? makes no sense.

A—I loved Twinkies as a kid. Now when I think of eating one, I get nauseous.

As a corporation, Hostess was obviously in death throes. Concessions, in this case would be similar to pumping air into a tire with no sidewall.

To nearly quote something I heard recently, “Unions are people too.”

C. Greed of Hostess CEOs after bankruptcy and resultant Bain-inspired company destruction.
