I had a yo-yo when I was little, but the only thing I could make it do was swing it around my head like a lasso and try to knock stuff off of the bookcase.

My nephew got a good Duncan yo-yo yesterday (not from me), and my husband, dad and brother were all showing him how to “yo-yo” and having a great time reminiscing and doing all sorts of tricks. The boy? He tried once and went back to the cell phone his dad gave him. Sigh.

Actually, yo-yos are big right now. There are lots of people of all ages who are learning amazing yo-yo skills and taking part in competitions. My 13 year-old would rather have a new yo-yo over just about any other gift. We’re close to the National Yo-Yo Museum in Chico (google it) and there are players all around the world. It is a great skill for young ones and can be very entertaining. You can see all kinds of videos on YouTube, Yoyoexpert, and other sites.

I remember needed to stand on a stool to play with my yo-yo. I was so short that if I didn’t, it would hit the ground every time.
