It’s just another “deregulation” advantage to the people, that Mitt wants more of. Of course, this pharmaceutical deregulation is also from the same folks bringing NO NEGOTIATING drug prices in Medicare Part D. Yep, another big “advantage” from the Republicans in Congress. It isn’t just who’s in the White House.
Let me get this straight…when the pharmaceuticals come up with a cure, they are supposed to give it away but now Trout is mad that they won’t spend money looking for cures?
This story is just one more example of why intelligently designed and enforced regulation of industries that effect the environment, safety, and personal health is so necessary. Poorly drafted regulation does impede safe growth, but poorly regulated companies too often put profits over life. I loved the movie Erin Brokavich and the part where lawyers for the company being sued reach for a glass of water. “Are you thirsty? I had that flown in special for you.” The lawyers left the water alone.This story stands alone as tragic. When placed alongside Love Canal, BP Oil Spill, Massey Mines, and too many others…its nearly insulting to our nation. This company who compounded the drugs to make their product will simply go bankrupt, a small amount of money will be paid out, and those responsible will go to trial. If history is to be our guide, they will never do any time.My wife had steno sis in her lumbar and received a shot for it six weeks before this story came to light. We are assured the drug she received was from another source. It was still a bit scarey until we talked to the doctor.Respectfully,C.
The free market will do the right thing, and there is no need for regulation…IF the people in charge are honorable. Given that we cannot trust that IF, regulation is necessary. Remember when Dubya put a toy-industry executive in charge of the Consumer Products Safety Commission. One Christmas we had the problem with lead paint on toys, the next we had a toy which, if parts were swallowed, turned into Rohypnol (the Date-Rape drug). And when he put a mining executive in charge of mine safety…….C Downs is correct. Intelligent regulation is necessary. Stupid regulation is not. No regulation is a recipe for disaster.
^The fungus was a contaminant introduced because of “sloppy” procedure, apparently because controls weren’t followed. As in much deregulation, those controls have been reduced in many industries under "W"’s administration.
BTW, Lunesta was permitted to be advertised, profits covered the total research costs, in about three days of sales. It’s a bad idea to have folks going to the doctor, demanding what drugs they want, that the doctors are being “bribed” to prescribe by the same companies.
YES, some drugs are expensive to develop, especially for “orphan” diseases or conditions where the “consumer base” is limited, However, most pharmaceuticals sell for many, many, times the cost of development, manufacturing, and marketing. That’s why when REPUBLICANS inserted the “no competition” clause in the Medicare Part D law, the public didn’t get the mine, just the shaft.
