Some people’s lack of geographical knowledge astounds me. At times I, too, need to refer to a map to find a geographical location, I’m unfamiliar with….but I do know that Autralia is bordered by nothing but ocean on all sides and that its closest neighbor is New Zealand.

Yep, living in Brisbane, Australia. I have been asked by a tourist once - “how long does it take to drive from Brisbane to New Zealand ?”

    Ummm, wot?

No drive to NZ mate! You paddle, swim or take a plane!

Here in the states I am constantly amazed by people’s lack of knowledge about our country much less other countries and continents. Of course I am still trying to figure the best route to drive from South Carolina to Hawaii! The road may pass by New Zealand.

I met a Texan on a cruise that didnt know there was any Washington other than Washington DC. So instead of living in the state of Washington, I find out that I am living in the state of confusion.

Unfortunately this level of misconception ( substitute a stronger word starting with “I” if you wish) is the norm rather than exception - perhaps it explains the popularity of GPS systems - truly sad

Hey, I know people who think New Mexico isn’t a state, but in another country!

Lady, just go to the zoo…….

That way, at least you’ll know where you are.

Actually people lack of knowledge of countries doesn’t surprise me…when studying geography I was in school, no one ever taught us where the countries were!

When I was younger and living in Texas, some new neighbors moved in from California. They were surprised that we had paved roads and that we didn’t travel on horses.

Oh my, lack of geographical knowledge may be the norm, but if you are traveling abroad, you should at least know where you are going.

Risistas: I was going to tell her that. You did a much better job though.

@ Jackknife15: New Mexico is a state? Durn- I was looking forward to meeting Mr. Castro and discussing politics with him on my vacation. Durn agent told me New Mexico was the Old Mexico but new and improved style.

last fall, online mapping took me to a quiet cul-de-sac in Saskatoon when i was trying to get to Wanuskewin Heritage Park north of S’toon. luckily, i had a road map, and got there with no further trouble. i put all my “directions” in the recycle bin and just drove from then on. best vacation i ever had.

Now with Google street view you can travel without leaving your computer. I recently “went” to Texas and didn’t see any horses on the road.

I have a fridge magnet from my visit to Austria which reads: No Kangaroos in Austria!’.

An enterprising Austrian businessman has imported kangaroos and opened a Kangaroo Park solely for US visitors.
