That was actually the way it was done for kids who hadn’t learned how to read yet. I remember doing the same thing when I was Sally’s age.

I remember doing this when I was a little kid, too, and I DID know how to read, and always wondered why it didn’t have more letters on it. I felt ripped off.

every time I read Peanuts and I see the kids doing things the parents should be doing I always imagine the parents in front of the TV with a bottle of Gin.

My brother used this test for his eyes too… when he was three and started using glasses, and they do the same one to him every tome he has an appointment and they check if he has to get new glasses, and now he’s six and he already read all Narnia (seven books) and he still does the E test. They did the E test on me for my glasses on June, when I was almost 15!! But they said, how do you see the E’s? And then they gave me something sorta like glasses and said: Do you see them any better now? And they did a test with a machine and they said I needed reading glasses…

When my son was first tested at about age 3 they had a picture chart but due to some developmental delays he didn’t know any of the pictures. I had them use the letter chart and then he had no problem.

The problem with the picture chart these days – it uses a 1950s era dial phone. How many kids could identify that? Really needs an update!

I remember being tested with this chart at age 4. I could already read, but I didn’t know my right hand from my left, so I resorted to tapping the chair arms and saying the E was pointing “this way” or “that way.” When I found out they had letter charts, I asked for that one. Then it got easier for everyone. I still don’t know right from left. I have left, and “the other left.”

Overheard in a Czech optimist’s office, “Can I read the bottom line? Heck, I know that guy!”

In the 1930’s (depression years), it was standard to use that type chart in the first few grades of school to test childrens eyes.
