Hi Joe, Yes. Actually that’s the only thing I DO remember from Civics class! I was in the math and science whiz kids group, politics was never even remotely one of my interests. We had moved from Michigan and were generally disgusted at the house quality and lot sizes in California compared to Michigan. Apparently the civics teacher was too. As a friend of ours said, California houses were good houses for earthquake country, they wouldn’t hurt you if they fell on you!!
Sadly, William T., Latin went out with Vatican II. On the bright side, Benedict has said it’s permitted again on a voluntary basis. Sadly, few if any have volunteered to use it. Prior to Vatican II you could go to Mass anywhere in the world and know exactly what was happening. Now, if you are attending Mass in a foreign country you sit there totally lost. It makes no sense not to use Latin.
Shades of J Danforth Quayle!
“I was recently on a tour of Latin America, and the only regret I have was that I didn’t study Latin harder in school so I could converse with those people.”
Did study Latin (one hand up) and do understand it (second hand up) as I’m a Latin teacher! The Quayle quote is posted in my room; amazing how many students don’t get it. Alas, they don’t “get” English either - grammar, spelling, syntax and punctuation are over their heads. Even worse, most don’t care, making that “teaching of Latin” part more of a challenge.

Reminds me of when I was in high school. Civics class test question: what’s the state fish of California? I put down “shark”. It got full credit!!

Susan001 said: Skyler, they spesk Spanish and Portuguese, which are offshoots of Latin. Some of their Catholic masses may be in Latin, too.
Really ? Do tell… ( I hope they “speak” it and don’t “spesk” it.)

Before Vatican II, Catholics could travel all over the world and not understand the mass exactly the same way.
Show of hands for anyone who actually studied Latin.

Maybe they should conduct Mass in Pig Latin. Everybody knows that!

I was going to search for a major newspaper in Latin America. A major issue might be announcing the Olympics going to Rio in 2016?

Hey Sarge, how about “Why should I speak English. I’m in America. They haven’t spoken it in years.”? Doc, same here.
