I think the caption has it backwards.

No, it is correct: I can do this (simulate) not that (stimulate). Needles are used to stimulate/ encourage hair growth, but here they are used to simulate/ copy hair growth. This caption is grammatically correct for the joke.

The caption is correct as the doctor placed the needles. It would be incorrect had the patient placed the needles (which would not have happened).

I thought too … it seems the caption has them switched.

No, the caption is correct. The needles are simulating (faking, pretending, representing) hair, not stimulating (encouraging the growth of) hair, and that’s why the pinhead is disappointed.

This is a rerun of a 2000 strip. Notice the lines of the drawing is not broken like they are today.

And did it stimulate such debate over “simulate” and “stimulate” back then?
