My son-in-law comes back from Baghdad tomorrow from his second deployment. He will be a civilian soon, ready to enter the wild and wooley ways of today’s economy. To him, all my friends I served with during Jimmy Carter, and everyone that puts their lives on the line for others, I salute you. May a loving Heavenly Father bless you and keep you even after your service.

It’s unique, but it forgets the rest of the world (as usual) who celebrate Remembrance Day … so I’ll pipe in and say:

LEST WE FORGET. Remember those Men and Women from AROUND THE WORLD who paid the price for us, and who are currently fighting to keep this world safe, and free

Anything I can add is redundant. Thanks, Ms. Guisewite, for the reminder, from the daughter, sister, wife, and mother of vets.

    Speaking of boots,…

When I joined the Army in 1961 they had only recently redesigned the uniforms, introducing, for example, the Army Green Class A uniform in 100% wool. One of the other changes was the color of the footwear, from brown to black, so “Brown Boot Army” referred to the Cold War Army of the ’50s and “Black Boot Army” referred to the Cold War Army of the ’60s.

In basic training some recruits with unusually large or small feet were issued brown boots and a bottle of black dye, but the black was never quite dark enough and the metal eyelets remained brown.

In Germany it was common to double-heel and -sole our black boots since if war broke out you didn’t want your boots to wear out before the fighting was over. But as a Nuclear Weapons Assemblyman I knew it wouldn’t have lasted that long.

After I got out, Vietnam started up, and although I don’t know if anyone else ever used the term, I called it the Green Boot Army for the canvas jungle boot. And now we mainly fight in deserts in what I call the Tan Boot Army.

I wonder, what color comes next and where?

Deepest thanks to everyone who has worn those boots.
