Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes has been a worldwide favorite since its introduction in 1985. The strip follows the richly imaginative adventures of Calvin and his trusty tiger, Hobbes. Whether a poignant look at serious family issues or a round of time-travel (with the aid of a well-labeled cardboard box), Calvin and Hobbes will astound and delight you.

Perhaps a lot of Social Security recipients will feel like panel 3 applies when it stops, after they paid in for 50 years.

Actually, like all idealists, Ayn Rand and her followers only considered the benign part of unrestrained capitalism and never considered the destructive role of greed, conspicuous consumption, or get-ahead-by-any-means.
The real problem is that the economic theorists that have been been running economic policy in the U.S. and most of the West also are blind to the role of greed. I was floored by the comment of one of the leading economists when an interviewer asked “What about greed in the market?” The economist replied “Greed doesn’t enter into it. The markets are driven by business decisions, not emotions.”

Every child up to maybe age 6-7 is a completely self-centered hedonist. Gradually civilization sets in. For MOST of them.

As I’ve said repeatedly, academic economics ranks second to astrology as the most useless avenue of human endeavour.

“Condition a child to be kind toward others and they tend to be that the rest of their life. Allow a kid to remain in irresponsibility, or even condition a kid to be irresponsible and the end result is what you get in much of my age group.”
Wow. I actually agree with something you said. Incredible.

Oh, come on!
Astrology is at least entertaining and fills in what would otherwise be a blank column of white in my daily paper.

Try looking up ‘The Trap’ by Adam Curtis. Its on Youtube, originally a BBC documentary. Its quite enlightening on how the economists took over, even if I don’t agree with all of Adam’s conclusions and assumptions.

“No, not spoon-bending or horoscopy, not the Golden Dawn or make-believe shamanism, astral projection or the Satanic Mass—if it’s mumbo jumbo you want go for the real stuff, banking, politics, social science—not that weak blavatskian crap.” ~ Hakim Bey, TAZ

No, Calvin. I believe it’s already the Al Franken decade and he’s not willing to give it up.
