From the Onionverse yesterday to the Swing today…

Didn’t read yesterday’s Calvin &H until now, but it’s always bugged me that the space program died in 1986…

Until then, it was “we’re going to Mars. We’re going to Venus. The outer Planets.” After that, it’s “no nuclear power in space, so forget going anywhere…”

And so the last time man left the outermost layer of the atmosphere, was in 1972…

Having been to places like Area 25 where fission-powered rockets once were test fired, preparatory to going to places like Mars, it makes me wonder just what happened to our zeal for outer space.

The aliens delivered a secret ultimatum. (May have been to Nixon.)

Once we have been war-free for twenty years, we can resume expanding our civilization into the Universe.

Until then, we don’t have a civilization, and we’re under quarantine.

I think reality finally overshadowed fantasy, Nab. First, we saw how painfully long it took to construct the ISS. Then we look at the massive space docks envisioned in the Star Trek movies and series – whole cites floating in space, necessary to support such exploration – and we can only barely imagine how long it would take to build something of that magnitude with present-day technology. In addition, actually assembling a battleship-size spacecraft in space; coupled with the fact that we have no propulsion system with unlimited range that can travel at the speed of light puts a pall on the dream. Are you up for a one-way ticket to Mars, Nab? The vehicle would have to be able to make a soft landing on Mars, take-off again under its own power, and return to Earth without refueling. We haven’t even finished exploring our own moon.
