Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth…(That’s a strange saying, where did that come from)

@Jo Clear
Horse traders had a reputation as notorious cheats, and some took pleasure in disguising a horse’s actual physical condition.
.
A horse trader described by William Faulkner in THE HAMLET disguised a scrawny horse by touching it up with paint and inserting a fitting under its skin so it could be pumped up like a bicycle tire.
.
Supposedly the best way to gauge a horse’s age and health was to look at its teeth and gums.

The further implication is that to check the horses’ teeth would be a sign of mistrust, impolite when receiving a “gift” horse

: ) First time I’ve ever seen Dr. Frankenstein in a suit and tie, rather than a lab coat… And the Monster is left-handed – does that go with the hand or the brain? Igor will make it right…
