    Chemically “FeO” would be Ferrite-Oxide, which only exists shortly in natural or artificial environments. “FeO2” has the wonderful name of “Hammerschlag” (“Hit by a Hammer”, a hard, gray-blue stuff that flakes off while hitting hot iron on an anvil) in German if memory serves well. On the other hand “FeO3” is your basic, garden variety rust. So the lesson learned from this would be “you can’t be without it, but don’t add to much O”…
