What I don’t get is how anyone can actually say this with a straight face, much less actually mean it. The GAO says our spending is unsustainable. On a national scale, that means collapse. And don’t tell me we need to raise taxes. We can’t raise enough in taxes to cover this.

It is both a spending and a revenue problem. Expect to have to spend a lot of money because it’s a big country and takes a lot of money to maintain the empire. Excess spending particularly to fund foreign wars and maintain 700 foreign military bases. Inadequate revenue exacerbated by catching up with Bush’s unfunded wars, unfunded subsidies to friends, unfunded programs, all the while cutting taxes. It you want stuff you have to dig deep into the hip pocket. And there’s a lot of catching up to do.

Without increased revenue, we can’t even make the payments on the debt (most owed to AMERICANS) already run up by idiotic spending and tax cuts, period. Yes, we need cuts, but not across the board, or idiotically, like not cutting “defense”, where the greatest waste is.

The U.S. does not maintain the military and the empire for altruistic reasons.

You finely got something Right. Canada is a buffer zone. Others? to keep aggressors at bay and keep the sea lanes open for trade….Study the history of the formation of the US Navy. A good read is The Barbary Pirates by C. S. Forester.
