One had the land, the other had the guns and the numbers.

That’s the “How.” The “Why” would have to do with the colonial viewpoints of superiority and entitlement.

a shorter version of that is:

    we want it

I might have enjoyed history more had you been my history teacher. Great story – explanation.

It went more than that way. Yours is a sterilized misconception of a religious based idea. And the autocthons, Amerindians, didn’t like their neighbors who come to their land and start putting up fences. Some protested with violence, others with treaties enforced by the Union blue coats against the red skins.
There was heavy promotion of Manifest Destiny on the crowded East coast to “go Westward young man!” Lied to them about riches etc. It wasn’t easy to farm. The white eyes killed their bison, fenced the ranges and pushed them out.
Its very title Manifest Destiny spoke of a holy mission of conquest. The Indians lost. If they had created and consolidated into the land of Comancheria, after the defeat of Custer and the 7th calvary they might have succeeded.

I’d say that Jack’s version was from a personal point of view and yours is from a political perspective. Each is true in its own way, as would be a dozen other perspectives… and don’t forget that both the personal and political required a fairly complex set of rationalizations…

Time and time again throughout history the people with the superior technology tended to think that they themselves were superior and that they had the right to subjugate everyone else.

Of course, it didn’t eliminate the NAs. It did seriously reduce their numbers, though, through forced assimilation and forced annihilation. They’re still around, though. Just walk into any casino in Connecticut, for example.

Sort of brings to mind the Israeli “settlements”, doesn’t it?
